Tips For Protecting A Garage Door From Hockey Pucks

Posted on: 13 January 2016

If you are a homeowner whose child plays hockey, chances are good that you are either going to need to figure out a really good way to protect your garage door from impromptu street hockey games, or you're going to have to resign yourself to replacing your garage door every few years. The latter option can become very expensive. As a result, you probably want to protect your garage door as well as possible. Here are some options that you have.

1. Get a Screen

One option is to get a screen for your garage door. There are several different companies that sell special screens that you put over your garage in order to make sure that hockey shots don't fly into an open garage and break anything that is in there, but allow your garage door to be protected nonetheless. When your son or daughter is playing hockey, make sure that he or she puts the garage door up and pulls the hockey screen down. This way, the screen can absorb the impact and stop pucks from flying into the garage and the garage door can be stored safely out of the way. The screen can either be automatic and controlled by a button or it can be manual, depending on your budget and your preferences. When the screen is not in use, you can simply put it up so that it is out of sight.

2. Get a Weighted Goal

Your other option is to get a weighted goal for your driveway. You want to be sure that the weight of your goal is heavy enough to not be pushed back when a puck or a ball is hit hard into the net. You also want to be certain that the goal, when in use, is placed far enough from the garage that a ball or a puck plunging through the net cannot touch your garage door. Consider measuring the maximum length of the net when it is stretched totally backwards and place the goal in the correct position so that the net cannot touch the garage door. Paint lines or chalk lines on your driveway so that your son or daughter knows exactly where to put the goal when he or she needs to use it. Since hockey is a team sport, your son or daughter will definitely have friends to help him or her move the weighted goal if it is too heavy for one person.
